6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking – Machame Route
Overview
This 6-day Mount Kilimanjaro Machame Route trek is one of the most scenic, adventurous, and rewarding ways to reach the summit of Africa’s highest peak — Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is favored for its dramatic landscapes, varied ecological zones, and excellent acclimatization profile. Unlike more direct routes, Machame follows a “climb high, sleep low” approach, significantly improving summit success rates for well-prepared trekkers.
The journey begins in dense rainforest at the base of Kilimanjaro and progresses through heath, moorland, alpine desert, and finally the icy summit zone. Each day offers a completely new environment, making this route visually diverse and physically engaging.
This trek is ideal for adventurous travelers with moderate fitness levels who want a more immersive and scenic Kilimanjaro experience.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
After breakfast in Moshi or Arusha, you are transferred to Machame Gate, where registration and briefing take place.
Begin your trek through lush montane rainforest, characterized by thick vegetation, towering trees, moss-covered trails, and rich birdlife.
The trail is steep in sections but incredibly scenic, offering a true introduction to Kilimanjaro’s natural beauty.
Arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight camping.
After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone.
The landscape opens dramatically, revealing wide views of Mount Meru and the surrounding plains.
The trail ascends steadily to the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s oldest volcanic formations.
Arrive at Shira Camp for rest, dinner, and overnight camping under clear mountain skies.
This is a key acclimatization day following the “climb high, sleep low” principle.
Ascend toward Lava Tower (4,600m), where the terrain becomes more alpine and rugged.
After acclimatization at higher altitude, descend into the scenic Barranco Valley, surrounded by giant senecio plants and dramatic cliffs.
Arrive at Barranco Camp, one of the most beautiful camps on Kilimanjaro, located beneath the towering Barranco Wall.
Dinner and overnight camping.
After breakfast, begin the climb up the famous Barranco Wall, a non-technical but steep section requiring light scrambling.
From the top, enjoy panoramic views of glaciers, valleys, and volcanic landscapes.
Continue across ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp, a key resting point before the summit push.
Arrive in the afternoon for rest, dinner, and overnight camping.
After breakfast, continue ascending through the alpine desert zone.
The landscape becomes increasingly harsh, rocky, and exposed, with minimal vegetation and cold conditions.
Arrive at Barafu Camp, the base camp for summit night.
Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Early dinner and early sleep are essential.
Around midnight, begin the final ascent under starlit skies.
The climb is steep and demanding, leading first to Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim, then continuing along the ridge to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
At sunrise, reach the summit — a powerful and emotional moment above clouds, glaciers, and the African continent.
After photos and brief celebration, descend back to Barafu Camp for rest, then continue further down to Mweka Camp for overnight camping.
