5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking – Marangu Route

Overview

This 5-day Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route trek is the most established and comfortable pathway to Africa’s highest peak. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it is the only Kilimanjaro route that offers hut accommodation throughout the climb, making it a preferred choice for trekkers seeking stability, comfort, and a more structured ascent.

The journey begins in the lush foothills of Kilimanjaro, passing through dense rainforest alive with birdsong and mist, before transitioning into heath and moorland zones with sweeping alpine landscapes. As altitude increases, the environment shifts dramatically into the stark, glacial world near the summit.

This route is designed for gradual acclimatization and steady progression, offering a classic and well-supported trekking experience to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa.
It is ideal for first-time climbers, moderately experienced trekkers, and those who prefer hut accommodation instead of camping.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

After breakfast in Moshi or Arusha, you are transferred to Marangu Gate, the starting point of the trek. After registration and briefing, begin your ascent through dense montane rainforest, where towering trees, moss-covered vegetation, and tropical birds create a rich natural environment. The trail is well-defined and gradually climbs through lush greenery. Arrive at Mandara Hut in the afternoon for rest, dinner, and overnight stay in shared mountain huts.
After breakfast, continue the ascent into the heath and moorland zone, where the landscape opens and vegetation becomes sparse and dramatic. The trail offers wide views of Mawenzi peak and surrounding volcanic terrain. This section provides excellent acclimatization as altitude increases steadily. Arrive at Horombo Hut, a larger mountain settlement with panoramic views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Dinner and overnight stay at Horombo Hut.
This day is dedicated to altitude adjustment, an important part of the Kilimanjaro ascent process. Optional hikes can be taken toward Mawenzi Ridge or Zebra Rocks, allowing your body to adapt while exploring higher terrain. The environment is open, scenic, and ideal for photography and rest. Return to Horombo Hut for meals and overnight stay.
After breakfast, ascend into the alpine desert zone, where landscapes become increasingly harsh, dry, and lunar-like. The terrain transitions into rocky paths with minimal vegetation, offering a dramatic shift in environment. The hike is steady and focused on energy conservation in preparation for the summit attempt. Arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon for rest, hydration, and early dinner. Early night rest is essential before the midnight summit push.
The summit attempt begins around midnight. The climb proceeds slowly through steep switchbacks toward Gilman’s Point (5,685m), followed by a final push along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. At sunrise, you reach the summit — a powerful moment above glaciers, clouds, and the African continent below. After brief celebration and photography, begin descent back to Kibo Hut for rest and refreshments, then continue further down to Horombo Hut or lower depending on pace. Final overnight or descent continues to Marangu Gate for completion of the trek.
